Love Keeps Us Kind

“Sexuality was a very powerful tool then. I keep my character’s homosexuality secret because you are so open to blackmail. It necessitates a certain amount of secretiveness, which goes hand in hand with spying. We talked about the idea that Guillam would have been a frozen child at one of the military public schools and there would be a distance between him and his parents, partly because of the work he was involved in. Guillam is in love with a man who’s older than him, and Smiley is another sort of father figure.” x
Benedict Cumberbatch in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (2011)
Sometimes, in the midst of my fangirling, I forget what an incredible actor Benedict really is. And then, I see movies like Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, and watch moments like this one in particular, that remind me what a truly talented and brilliant man he is.
I find it absolutely breathtaking that Benedict manages to express an entire lifetime of emotion, struggle, and heartbreak in thirty seconds. His quiet, wracking sobs are more moving than any overly dramatic monologue could ever be, because you can see that he is falling apart inside. He is absolutely shattered, and this is the only moment that he can take to let those feelings out. The one time that Peter can just be Peter, and mourn the loss of the man he loves. Without even speaking, Benedict Cumberbatch can break your heart.
Oh God this fucking scene. It wrecks my emotions every time I see it. Because that kind of pain isn’t just acting, it can’t be to be so terribly raw. He’s drawing it up from some where inside himself. Every one has suffered; whether it be pain or loss or hopelessness or depression. But we hide it. Bury it deep so it doesn’t wound us daily, well we try to any way. But actors, truly great actors, subject themselves to these deep feelings in order to represent the suffering that is being human. Benedict Cumberbatch is a truly great actor. This scene shows precisely why. That is why I will forever admire this man.
Well there are a myriad of other reasons as well but his acting prowess is first and foremost for me.
